Press Release Body: Chicago, IL, March 04, 2008--After a string of failures and victories spanning the thirty-three years since reading his first self-help book, Bruce (Brucie) Wood is guiding others through the mucky self-help waters. At BrucieBiz.com, The Fun Side of Self-Help, he leads with light-hearted comments and good-natured reviews of everything from cosmetic instruction books to financial advice, witchcraft and divorce.
A self-taught entrepreneur, Bruce (Brucie) Wood, received a Master's Degree in Fine Art in 1975 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduation he could only find low-paying, entry-level jobs. He relied on a single skill from college to help him get through. "Art education is all about problem-solving," he says, "and I had a big problem --all that education, and no marketable skills! No one was buying my art, so I turned to self-help books to learn how to make a living."
Brucie's interests led to a variety of businesses ventures. Some flopped, while others flourished. From the first self-help book, he learned to publicize his art. "I got great reviews," he says, "but still couldn't pay the rent." Then he read about investing in real estate. He learned to renovate houses and became a landlord with a dozen buildings. "That nearly killed me," he reflects. Brucie read books on Futures trading, and bought a seat on the Mid America Commodity Exchange. Eventually he became a registered floor trader (Yes, one of those guys who stands in the pit and yells) and a Commodity Trading Advisor (who sits in an office and yells). "I still have nightmares about that," he moans.
Brucie read books on direct-response television marketing, and started a company which sold telephones and wrenches on late-night TV. "But wait, there's more!" he beams. C.O.D. orders and faulty projections put him in debt from that venture.
Brucie also opened an art gallery in Michigan and two imported furniture boutiques in Chicago, with excellent results. He started an art publishing business, and a small audio and video label which publishes jazz and mystery movies. He learned to write screenplays, and produced his own feature-length film. (It's out on DVD as "Bruce Wood's The Door") Along the way, he also managed to sell quite a few of his own paintings. His art is now in museum and corporate collections.
In addition, Bruce Wood is a successful independent distributor with the network marketing company Market America. When he joined Market America, he was amazed at the number of self-help books his associates were reading. "I finally found a group of people like me, who were looking for something better than what their jobs and education had provided -- but I was surprised by how awestruck they were with some books."
"One thing I've learned is that most self-help Gurus are way too serious about their products," Brucie says, "And I guess they should be, since they need to project credibility in order to build a following. But as an artist, I tend to have a quirky view of their presentations. The info's no less valuable, and I'm not critical of their advice if it's sincere, but I do like to have a bit of fun while learning something new."
Featuring light-hearted comments and good-natured reviews, BrucieBiz.com aims to make it easy and entertaining for people to find mainstream and unusual self-help resources.
